Written in 1485, Bipradas's Manasamangal and in 1580 Chandimangal of Mukundaram, has  mention  the presense of Calcutta . But there is disagreement over whether this Calcutta is the current Calcutta.

According to Suniti Kumar Chattopadhyay, lime was created by Pump the snail hole, hence Calcutta originates from Kolichun. Calcutta expert P. Nayar says Calcutta is the English form of Kolkata. According to him, about 300 years ago, a canal was in the present Hastings street to present saltlake. And this canal joined with ganga near today’s prince ghat. From this canal the “khal-kata” name formed and this change to “calcutta”

It is again heard that the origin of the name of Kolkata from "Kalikatha" or "Kalighat".

In 1688, in a letter written by Job Charnock on June 22, 1688, and in 1689 Charles Iyer, in the letter written to Elihu Yale, mentions "Calcutta".

How did the name of Calcutta come? This debate continues today. Any one of these
Calcutta nomenclature can be called as.
